Gremlins

I have yet to figure out the mysterious force in my washing machine and/or dryer that takes long-sleeved shirts and turns the sleeves (one or both of them) inside out during the washing and/or drying cycle. I make it a point to see that the sleeves are all turned right side out before washing them and yet somehow they always manage to get turned inside out.

This wouldn't bother me so much if it happened to short-sleeved shirts. It perplexes me when it happens to long-sleeved shirts.

That's some pretty delicate maneuvering for a large capacity washer and dryer!

Saturday on My Mind

Why is it that, after you've taken a day off, say last Monday, and you have a four-day work week, when Friday rolls around, it's just about all you can do to get yourself in gear and get to work for that one last day?? It happens to me every time! Like if I take off a Monday, I should automatically take off the following Friday, too.

Of course, if I did that, I probably wouldn't want to go in on Thursday, either! Feh.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Scissors Cut Paper

girl-scissors.gif
Scissors cut paper. They also cut flesh. I had always thought that you could get stabbed or knicked by a pair of scissors. I never thought that you could actually slice into your flesh and chop out a piece of it. But I learned that lesson last night.

I now have a 1/2 inch long flap of skin that is detached on three sides from my finger because I snipped it off with scissors. When it happened, I looked dumbly down at my finger and thought, 'Huh.'

You learn something new every day, I suppose!

And furthermore...

sledding.gif
I was just watching the news. It seems that there are towns out there that must outlaw sledding.

Sledding.

Sledding.

Why? Because some kid broke his leg while sledding and the parents sued and won $600,000. But bravo to the Connecticut town where, despite the fact that they were also sued for a sledding accident and the plaintiff won $6 million, they refuse to outlaw sledding.

It's sledding, people. Next thing you know, there goes bike riding and baseball playing and generally moving at all. Nope, can't do any of those - you might get hurt!

This kind of behavior (along with reality shows) is the shame of our nation. Ugh.

Shame on CNN!!

I am outraged! Sensationalistic journalism should not be a part of CNN.com. I'm sorry - I expect more from them. Here's what I'm talking about...

The headline reads... Leak forces Michigan nuclear plant shutdown

Everyone on this planet will assume that that means a radioactive leak, right? No, it's a freakin' water leak.

Foul, CNN! FOUL!!

Book Review

I finished a book over the weekend. It's Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson. I simply loved it! It was so interesting to me and I feel like I know a whole lot more about deep sea diving now, too. Enjoyable and educational to boot! Imagine that.

I realized that the last three books that I read were non-fiction. This is not normally a genre I dwell in so it was a bit odd for me. I decided to hop back into fiction and I picked up a book that I saw in the NY Times Book Review - but not being reviewed, only an advertisement for it.

It's called Plain Heathen Mischief by Martin Clark. I've only read a couple of chapters so far but it's got me uncomfortable. Did you ever watch a movie where a seemingly innocent character gets caught up in some shady dealings and finds him- or herself suddenly involved in absolute wrongness? Yeah, that's the feeling I'm getting here. It makes me want to yell out to the character to get the hell away and don't look back! Don't try to make it better - it will only get worse. Run, Forrest, RUN!!!

We'll see how this turns out. So far nothing terrible has happened but I just get this feeling...

I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm

Popping in for a brief visit to the blog-o-world. We got about a foot of snow yesterday and today we're getting wind gusts somewhere around 30 mph right now, expecting 50 mph gusts. Fortunately, we don't have anywhere to go until Tuesday - yes, folks, we planned ahead and scheduled a micro-mini vacation this weekend and took Monday off. How smart are we??

We're planning on staying hunkered down, watching some movies, drinking some fun little drinks until we're silly and generally enjoying being stuck inside. Buzz cleared off most of the snow yesterday but, thanks to the wind, it's mostly back. So we're not going to even attempt anything today. We'll worry about that tomorrow.

I hope you're all warm and safe and enjoying the weekend.

Me Upon My Pony On My Boat

Yesterday, we got a surprise in the mail. (I'd post a picture of it, but I'm at work and currently without my camera, et al.) It came our way from Florida from a fellow blogger named Solonor.

It's a CD of his called "Potpourri of Noise" and we started listening to it in the car on the way to work this morning. How much fun is this?? I particularly love the robot song (can't remember the title right off), which I believe he wrote. And the title of my post is from the Lyle Lovett song he covers on this disc. One of my favorites!

Sol, your sound reminds me of a group I was listening to back in the early '90s - The Tom Russell Band. Ever hear of them? Also, have you ever considered covering any Lloyd Cole? I can so hear you singing "Weeping Wine".

Great stuff!! Thanks for sending it to us!!

Talk Amongst Yourselves

I'll give you a topic.

Blogs - is there an actual lifespan of the average blog?

Discuss!

A lot of people I know are sort of or absolutely abandoning their blogs. Or making sounds like they want to. Or just sort of fading away. (By the way, you can count this as me making sounds like I want to.) Many of the familiar blogs that I read on a regular basis started at approximately the same time - somewhere between one and three years ago. On the cosmic scale, that's EXACTLY the same time!

So, I'm wondering. Is this about the lifespan of your average blog? Sure, there are others who are going to live a long, long time and some that will fizzle out after just a very short time - just like people. But I'm picking up some definite FEH vibes out here amongst the one- to three-year-olds.

Or maybe they're just in my head.

What do you think?

Point to Ponder

As Buzz and I were walking through the grocery store last night, he gave me a wonderous point to ponder. He said:

The wrapper on the toilet paper in the bathroom at work says that it's "facial quality".

It made me think. Do you really need "facial" quality in your toilet tissue?

P.S. I had a pretty damn good night's sleep last night. Just a couple of brief waking interludes during the night. I don't think I even tossed, let alone turned. I almost cried when I woke up this morning! It's the simple things in life that mean the most sometimes!

Weekend Review

I had the best weekend. I spent the whole time with my husband and only my husband. Well, the cats were there, too. We didn't leave the house from the time we got home from work on Friday until we left for work this morning. It was like being away on a vacation! No one bothered us and we had no obligations to anyone but ourselves. Ahhhh!

Christmas has been put away for another year, the house is organized, we read and listened to music, the exercise room is now completely functional (and I tried it out to be sure), we conducted sleep experiments to see what's up with my (lack of) sleeping, and we did a lot of talking. Lots and lots of talking. He's my favorite person on earth and who better to spend a weekend talking to than your favorite person on earth?

Indeed.

Anyway, it was great to have such a satisfying and relaxing weekend. I hope to be able to do it again soon. Maybe next weekend...

Reporting to you from the center of the cyclone...

Whoa! We're having some wicked weather right now. I don't mean that it's anything like California or Asia or even Illinois, but the wind is fierce! It's been howling - no, literally, howling - since about 1:00 this morning. (I know that because I've been up since then!) I'm just waiting for one of our skinny old trees in the back to come tumbling down.

I don't think I want to be here when that happens!

Batten down the hatches, boys! We're in for some nasty weather!!

My bags have bags

I looked in the mirror last night and saw big dark circles under my eyes. I took a Simply Sleep and went to bed at 8:00. I was asleep by 9:00 but woke up at 10:00, 2:00 and 4:00. Aren't those pills supposed to make it so you stay asleep??

Now my back is killing me from being in bed for so long - but not sleeping well - and I actually have dark circles over my eyes. What's that?

Buzz told me that those are eyebrows and everyone has them. Funny!

No, seriously, I'm starting a sleep log today so that I can figure out if there is anything that I can do to make it better for my sleepy time.

Oh, and where does one get melatonin? Do you have to have a doctor prescribe it or can you buy it in a store?

Explore Your World

I've had just about no sleep for the past week and it finally caught up with me. I stayed home from work today and tried to sleep. That's not working but I did find a fascinating TV channel that's been keeping me company all day. It's the National Geographic channel. Cool stuff!

I've seen a show about swimming with manatees and sharks (not at the same time), a show about deep-sea shipwreck recoveries, a show about destructive locust plagues in Africa, and right now, there's a show on about giant lightning. Wow!

I'm exploring my world! (But I keep wishing that Jeff Corwin was hosting these shows. Oh well.)

Throw it out the window!

You know, the scale can become quite an obsession when you're dieting. I always find that if I'm dieting, I'm hungry. And if I'm hungry, it must mean I'm losing weight, right? So there are times that I'll weigh myself four times a day. But that's not an obsession, is it? OK, yes, it is. We're bordering on obsessive/compulsive at that point.

So, I'm officially back in the saddle as of today. (Except that we're going out for dinner tonight, but that was arranged a while ago!) I weighed myself before bed last night to get the Worst-Case™. Not happy with the number, but educated as to where I was beginning, I went to bed.

I got up this morning and weighed myself. Normally, the biggest change I will see from night to morning is two pounds.

The scale said I had lost 5˝ pounds overnight.

Now, granted, I was up most of the night, so maybe I walked it all off. More likely, I have a stupid scale and I shouldn't trust anything it says. I should throw it out the window and start going by how I feel and look and how my clothes are fitting.

But I'm not that brave. I need some concrete reassurance that all my hard work is paying off!!

I'm addicted to my scale. *sigh*

MOTB - And Only Nearly Four Months Late!

I can't believe it's been over three months since the last Men of the Blogosphere™ post! And, while it sounded like a good idea when it started, I sort of got uncomfortable contacting a bunch of people I didn't know and asking for pictures, so it scared me away.

I'm not going to be soliciting any more entries, however, I do still have a bunch of pictures that I gathered back then. So, I'm going to post these from time to time and I'm going to start with someone who, I'm mortified to say, I missed during the initial flurry of MOTB posts.

Yes, folks, I'm talking about the one, the only, Pete Beck from www.petebeck.com. He and his lovely wife, Erin, are two of the kindest souls on the planet. One day, Buzz and I are going to travel to the other side of the country to party with these guys. And we are going to have a grand time, yes we are!

The ABCs of Insomnia

Years ago, I worked out my own version of counting sheep to get myself to fall asleep at night. It serves the same basic purpose but in my own maniacal way. I go through the alphabet thinking of various things that start with each letter. Here are some of the subjects I regularly use:

* Names of animals
* Names of fruits and vegetables
* First names of singers
* Last names of singers
* One word musical groups

You get the idea. The thing is, I'm sort of out of fresh ideas. So how about it? Can you help out a poor insomniac? What are some new lists of things I can think about while drifting off to sleep? And remember - the purpose is to relax me (or bore me) so much that I fall asleep, so nothing exciting!

I feel a little like the Poster Child for Minor Maladies™. Yes, 2005 is the year for my body to slowly start to break down. And yet, I'm not upset by it. I have an inner feeling of calm and well-being about it all. I'm taking it in stride and that's a good thing.

It could be because there are so many others in the world who have it SOOOO much worse than I do, for a multitude of reasons.

Or it could be the ginkgo biloba I've just started taking...

Blind to my blinds.

Buzz and I got new blinds for the basement yesterday. They are double-cell pleated blinds and they're pretty cool. Buzz got them all hung up last night and I stood back to admire them. They are a pretty dusty blue-green color called Palm by the manufacturer. We ordered the same type and color for all three things we needed covered - two regular windows and sliding glass doors.

As I stood there being all pleased at actually having window coverings and ecstatically happy that they actually fit, Buzz said, "It doesn't look too garage door-y, does it?"

And, sure enough, the pleated blinds covering the sliding glass doors do look eerily like the door to a self-storage garage. Um, I'm thinking we had better make some arrangements real quick to get a valance made for that puppy. Because now I can't look at it without thinking that I have to get a key to open up the blinds! *sigh*

TV Shows and Their Survival Rate
Did you ever sit down and watch a new TV show and by the end of the show you just knew that it was never going to last? Usually, it's not because they are so bad, but because they are a little too irreverant or cerebral or just so left of center that you know the general public is not going to be comfortable with it.

Way back in 1987, a new show premiered. It was called The Charmings. 'Twas a silly show. But I loved it! The basic premise is that Snow White and Prince Charming are married and got transported to modern day Burbank. Along with the Magic Mirror (played by Paul Winfield, whom I LOVED!). I knew after one episode that this show would never last but I watched every episode that was on that season. Good stuff!

Now, however, I have stumbled across this obscure little show on cable. It, too, is irreverant, but to everything. EVERYTHING! You might have heard of it - South Park? How long has this show been on? And I have never seen an episode until New Years Eve night when we had Comedy Central on in the background waiting for midnight to arrive. Holy moly - this show is hilarious!! I cannot believe some of the things they say and do. And I've been missing it all these years!! But, you have to understand that this show has survived because it's on cable. If they had tried to pitch it on prime time big network, well, first of all, they'd have to cut about every other word, but even if they did get it through, it would never last. There'd be a huge public outcry against the indecency and it would be a faint memory before you could say Jack Robinson!

Gotta love cable! I say, let's bring back The Charmings, only spice 'em up in a South Park sort of way and show them on Comedy Central. Sounds like a good idea to me!

The Year in Review

That's 2004, not 2005. There's not much of 2005 to review yet, now is there?

I just went over CNN's Passages report - those who died in 2004. I always look at these things and I get all melancholy but at the same time, I sometimes wonder where I was when these people's deaths were announced. Without exception, I will read a Year in Review and find out that there were at least two significant deaths that I missed. Does this happen to just me?

I guess I have to wait for the People Year in Review or the Time/Life Year in Review to know for sure, but it seems like it was a relatively light year in the "famous people" category for deaths. That actually wouldn't be a bad thing. We lose too many good people every year - not that all famous people are good, but you know what I mean.

Of course, we lost a multitude of people in the tsunamis, enough to last through my lifetime, that's for sure, and many others beside.

Don't know where I was going with this post, so I think I'll just stop it right here. Have a good evening!

Day Three

Evidently, my New Year's resolution was to come up with the absolute most boring titles for my posts. And I'm doing a grand job of it, don't you think??

Anyway, Cassie-B has an interesting post up about bizarre and unique holidays in January. The holiday today is two-fold:

* Sleep Day
* Humiliation Day

I could really get into Sleep Day! It would fit perfectly into my relatively lazy weekend (although we did go to the mall on the first full weekend after Christmas, so that has to count for major effort!), but I have to go to work. The second "holiday" is Humiliation Day. Seeing how my week ended last week - wherein the vendor did not show up on the very last day that we had to work out the kinks in my project prior to going live - I could very well be in for an old-fashioned ass-kicking today. From whom, I don't know. The end users seem to be resigned to not getting the product they need on time but I'm not! I'm not satisfied with this at all! So maybe I'll be giving myself an old-fashioned ass-kicking and how humiliating will that be?

Yes, sadly, I believe this is the day that I must celebrate Humiliation Day. Oh, for the days of my youth when I could still celebrate Sleep Day!

Day Two

I guess it's time to get my arse in gear. Although I would love to spend today just like yesterday (except that it's colder today - no sunning on the deck), I guess I have to be a grown-up and face responsibilities. Bleh.

I just realized that the treadmill that we bought last year is finally paid off. Of course, it's been sitting in a restful cocoon-like state since I don't know when. Months, though. So I think it's time to unwrap the thing and hop back on. We have to rearrange the room it's currently in, but I don't think that will take long. The thing that will really take a long time is putting the Bowflex back together. I don't look forward to that! But we'll have our exercise room up and functional before too long. Then it's a new year - back on the diet (LOSE THOSE HOLIDAY POUNDS!) and back to the exercise regimen. I'll feel better once we're there.

Oh, that reminds me - we have to get to the grocery store and buy our fat-free items and lots of fruit. Back into it!

For now, I just threw a load of laundry in and I just finished paying the bills so I'm going to pour myself another cup of coffee and read a little. This book I'm reading is fascinating! It's called Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson. I'm only 70 pages in, but it's really captured my interest. Who knew I was interested in deep-sea divers?? The NY Times Book Review - that's who!

Day One

So far, this year has been great! It's almost 5:00 PM and I haven't yet taken my shower today. I just woke up from a nap and I'm moving nice and slow.

The day started out with mimosas with breakfast and sort of slowed down from there. I sat out on the deck in the wonderful sunshine-y 60 degree weather and read my book. Then I closed my eyes and just soaked up the sun for a while. I ate leftovers for lunch - yummy stuff! - and then slept for a couple of hours.

So far, this year has been great! And I still have another day left before I have to go back to work. Yeah, baby, yeah!

(But I do have hives for some reason. No change in soap or detergent or eating habits. I just have hives. So it's an itchy year so far, but I'm not letting it bother me much. I just scratch at them once in a while like an old lazy dog.)

How's your year going so far?
