Here I thought there was only one truly great hockey song ever written. I’m speaking, of course, about “The Penalty Box” by Dave Schultz! Millions will remember this as being one of the most scintillating works of art ever to hit the media. Those people are insane, naturally, but there are others of us who will be reminded of the year that the Flyers won the Stanley Cup the first time. I was 13 years old and had absolutely no interest in hockey whatsoever. But there I was with the rest of the gang outside screaming and hollering at the passing cars – the Flyers won the Stanley Cup, the Flyers won the Stanley Cup! I’m as susceptible to mob mentality as the next guy. Now here we are again, poised on the edge – win or lose tonight and be the hero or the goat. David Dye on WXPN was playing some hockey songs on the radio tonight on the way home. He played a song I’d never heard before and I have to say that there are now two truly great hockey songs. He played “Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song)” by Warren Zevon. This, folks, is what hockey is all about.
The goalie committed, Buddy picked his spot
Twenty years of waiting went into that shot
The fans jumped up, the Finn jumped too
And coldcocked Buddy on his follow through
The big man crumbled but he felt all right
'Cause the last thing he saw
was the flashing red light
He saw that heavenly light
Let’s go Flyers!

Here's one for you, Matt!

Thank's Pat, just the pick-me-up I needed this morning! Go Flyers!
